FREE WORKSHOPS: How To Advocate so Your Children Can Thrive in School
Earlier this year we announced funding for a collaboration with the Black Equity Organisation (BEO) to explore how legal tools can be used to support the unique challenges faced by African communities right here in Cumbria, starting with the education sector.
Since then, we’ve been working in the background to arrange FREE workshops in June, inviting African parents and carers to attend. If that’s YOU or someone you know, read on for answers to all your important questions.
——–
➡️ What will happen at the workshops?
We’ll talk about some of the experiences you and other parents have had in our schooling system and listen to how they’ve been handled.
What worked?
What didn’t?
Together, we’ll talk through ideas on what could be done better or differently and answer as many questions as we can.
We’re delighted that Migrant Action will be joining us to help with info around what you can, or can’t, do when it comes to Migrant Education Justice and address any fears you might have in challenging racism your children may be subject to.
From there, BEOs legal team will begin to build a framework of tools taking account of the unique challenges faced by African parents in Cumbria and beyond.
Get support in building your skills and confidence on how to advocate for your child at school, so they can thrive in our education system.
Let’s find ways to uplift our communities!

➡️ Who should attend?
These workshops are designed to centre the experiences of parents and carers from Black African communities in Cumbria. We will discuss culturally specific challenges and build confidence in advocating for children within the UK education system. As such the content is currently tailored for this audience as part of our commitment to advance racial equity in our schools. This is very much a pilot project and we want to learn from it to be able to hold more workshops for other parents with differing circumstances in the future.
——–
➡️ Will there be refreshments?
Yes! Hot and cold drinks on arrival… and what good event goes ahead without a belly full of food?!
We’ve got you covered with caterers booked for each of the venues – Flavamore, a Jamaican foodie, “new on the block” Anita, who will be serving up some serious varieties of jollof rice and meats, and food by (another Anita!) Anita’s Home Kitchen.
——–
➡️ Will there be childcare support available?
Absolutely. Our youth workers will be on hand if you have little ones who need to be kept busy or if you’re attending the evening session. Older ones are welcome to come along, hang out, catch up and find out more about our youth spaces!
——–
➡️ When and where are the workshops?
We’ve put on 3 sessions to offer choices for you. If it means you have to travel and that’s tricky for you, just reach out. We’ll do our best to help.
