ITV covers Launch of Anti Racist Cumbria

By September 24, 2020January 19th, 2023Latest

ITV visited Anti Racist Cumbria HQ earlier this week to share news of our launch and talk with our Chair Janett Walker about why our organisation is needed in Cumbria.

Reporter Samantha Parker also spent time discussing our campaign to end racism in schools and tackle the systemically racist curriculum. This specially recorded piece will kick off ITV Border’s coverage of #BlackHistoryMonthUK and interviewed both our Chair Janett and Anti Racist Cumbria’s Youth Support Lead Chimwemwe Chirwa.

Race & Education Event

Chimwemwe went through both primary and secondary school in Cumbria and despite having only finished school a few years ago talked of the overt and subtle racism she faced during this time and the impact this had on her.

Chim is one of our Youth Support Leads and has been talking to current Cumbrian school-goers and sadly their stories remain the same as hers. Chim’s stories and children like hers are why we chose ending systemic racism in Cumbrian education as our first project.  It’s crucial these young voices are heard and it’s why they form an integral part of our upcoming event for all Cumbrian Headteachers, council and parliamentary leaders.
