With Gratitude & Excitement
We have some pretty big news about a change in our staff lineup. One of our wonderful co-founders, Sophia Newton (Minden), is stepping down from their role as Communications Director today to pursue an exciting new journey as a freelance ethical and creative comms consultant.
We want to give our heartfelt thanks to Soph for her incredible dedication, humour, and hard work. Your contributions have made a lasting impact, and we are grateful for everything you’ve done. We know we haven’t seen the last of her though as Soph will still be volunteering for us ‘on the other side’.
At the same time, we’re thrilled to welcome Meg Guy to our team! Meg has been with ARC since the very beginning and will be stepping into a newly shaped role as Policy & Comms Lead, bringing fresh energy, different expertise and ideas to our mission. We can’t wait to see the amazing things we will achieve together.
Soph says:

It wasn’t an easy decision to leave Anti Racist Cumbria. I still can’t really believe that had the privilege of helping to build it from scratch alongside two Black women, including my long-time business partner and friend, the brilliant Janett Walker, now the charity’s CEO. My time at ARC has been incredibly rewarding, and I am proud of the impact we have made so far. An anti-racist country was inconceivable, it now feels more than possible, probable in fact!
However, I have always believed in embracing change at the right time, and I feel it is now time for new personal challenges and opportunities. I am excited to start my work as an ethical and creative communications consultant. ARC is taking new steps and I can’t wait to see how it grows and changes with Meg Guy, an extremely bright talent, taking the communications helm. Good luck Meg, you’re going to be brilliant I know!
I will always be most proud to have helped create and be part of a growing community of people who believe in a fairer society, many of whom I now call my friends. My life is richer for having been part of ARC and always will be. Thank you ARC – my commitment to anti-racism doesn’t end today.

Meg Guy
I’m so excited to be taking on this role at Ant Racist Cumbria! Whilst I’ve been employed by some great charities working on racial health inequalities, HIV and more recently suicide prevention policy, it’s always been a dream to work for ARC and to be part of making real change in my home county.
I’ve been involved in Anti Racist Cumbria since the beginning, after the murder of George Floyd in 2020. As a proud Cumbrian I felt, and still feel, that there is no reason why Cumbria can’t be leaders in anti-racism by becoming the first anti-racist county in the UK. As the charity has grown, I’ve been so inspired by the fact that this ground breaking work pushing for radical change is happening in Cumbria. Not in a city. Not in the South. In Cumbria.
It’s testament to the team, the volunteers and everyone who has supported anti-racism here! I’ve taken anti-racism with me throughout my career so far but I am so excited to channel my own anti racism through our comms and policy, influencing change alongside the ARC team and all our volunteers. Soph has done so much for ARC, and for me, and I hope to carry on her legacy and become part of ARCs next chapter.
