Anti Racism Care Package: Post Summit

Thank you for coming to our Summit. We are proud to have shared this brave and bold space with you all today and hope that if this was your first step, that you continue to move forward with this work.

We’ve created this package of resources to help you to further your learning and stay engaged, because anti racism is about staying active: making conscious efforts and deliberate equitable actions intended to provide equal opportunities and outcomes for all people on both an individual and a systemic level.

This work is essential, but it is tough. As we learned through our embodiment practice at the Summit, it can really take its toll on both your mental and physical wellbeing. It’s really important to take good care of yourself as well as others around you as you learn how to adapt to this new way of thinking – and doing!

We hope you find this page of resources helpful. If you find others that help you, please share them with us too and we’ll add them.

Speakers & Panellists

We hope you enjoyed our speakers and panellists input as much as we did. A huge thank you to them from us all.

Head to this page to learn all about them and find links to their socials, websites, resources and books!

Intersectional Allyship

Last years Summit included a workshop about intersectional allyship from Lady Phyll and ARC member & youth worker Chim Chirwa.

They compiled this incredible, comprehensive list of different resources, books, films, series podcasts and more – definitely check it out!

Self Care

We would encourage you to engage with the above resources and to join communities like ARC in order to learn, grow and challenge yourself. Or why not create your own? A book club is a great place to start and if you can’t do that, we have a bi-monthly Book Club which will be back in 2024 and all are welcome, wherever you are in your  learning.

Volunteering for organisations, not just ours, can expand your circle, as too can expanding your social media in order to include a more varied influences and content.

It is important that we challenge social norms and seek out all voices speaking on this. Other local organisations you could look into volunteering for include Helping Hands – https://www.facebook.com/helpinghandscumbria/ – and Cumbria CVS – https://cumbriacvs.org.uk/ .

For white people learning about racism and oppression, here are some of our top book recommendations;

Don’t forget to look after yourself. We must stress this to you. This work is not light, though necessary, it is heavy and at times extremely exhausting and emotionally draining. Allow yourself space. Take a walk in nature. Spend time in safe spaces, with people who not only challenge you but also support and empower you to continue to grow. Sleep. Take a bath. Get lost in a book. In a rubbish TV series. Cook and eat your favourite food. Whatever it is you need to rest and recover. Treat yourself with kindness.

Here are some organisations for Black and Brown people – however you identify – that offer practical advice and support:

Also don’t forget our Living Whilst Black sessions – https://antiracistcumbria.org/free-community-safe-space-for-healing-racial-trauma/ – you do not need to be a member to attend these!

Stay in Touch

Once again thank you so much for your contribution to our 2023 Summit.

We are grateful for your willingness to learn and challenge yourself. Please do keep in touch.
